Frohawks with irregular cornrows for your afropunk (or jewfro-rockin') sims.

I love frohawks, and us straight-haired people already have tons of different TS3 hair options, so I figured I'd see if I could do frohawks some justice.  This was my first hair mesh ever. (And holy crap, I can understand why a bunch of hair makers end up going pay!)  There was a crazy amount of work involved to learn, make, and troubleshoot this, so I hope you all enjoy it.

These are enabled for all ages and genders.  Poly count is medium/high at around 7700.

Lots of thanks to BloomsBase & CmarNYC for answering my questions, Hysterical Paroxysm & Delphy at MTS for the tutorials and programs, and WesHowe for the Milkshape plugins.

Edit:  I just noticed that Tifa made a sim with this hair. (And I love the way she styled her!  I wish I could leave a comment for her!)  It looks like she has a better computer/graphics card than I do, and she took some nice, higher quality pics of the hair.  You can check it out at her blog.

Wow!! :D

I'd feel like a twat if I didn't comment on your awesome creation, so here it goes:
Hair meshes must take a lot out of a person, but the end result looks fantastic! I cannot wait to use these on my sims, male or female. Thanks for sharing the awesome that this is, and finally, more nappy hair for my sims!!! :D

Awww... I'm glad you like it!

Awww... I'm glad you like it! For my next few projects I'm planning on making a few more hairs for nappy headed sims, so there should be more on the way!

LOVE IT!!!!!!

np. thanks for the comment!

Wow wow wow

I so appreciate that you created this. Stuff like this is a rarity so when it pops up I'm so ecstatic and grateful. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Makes me want to start making cc, I have so many ideas, seeing that stuff like this can be done makes me happy. Cause since it's a rarity I assume either it just doesn't peek majorities interest or it's really hard to make which is why I really appreciate the effort in creating this and it's beautiful.

So thank you!

Thank you. I've actually

Thank you. I've actually been dreaming about making this mesh for about... 2 year now. I just didn't have the skills when I started out. It takes a lot of hard work, but it's worth it to make something you're proud of. :)

Looks just like Nouk's

Looks just like Nouk's frohawk to me. Would it really have killed you to give her some kind of acknowledgment? Its obvious to everyone familiar with Nouk's hair where you got your inspiration.

You know nothing, Jon Snow

Its obvious to everyone familiar with Nouk's hair where you got your inspiration.

Right, because there's no possible way that I could've seen a frohawk with cornrows in real life.

But to offer complete disclosure, I did get inspiration from Nouk's afropuff well as EA's Halloween hair, EA's cornrows, and EA's mohawks to figure out the best techniques to use on the different parts of the hair based on my skill level. As it turns out, "make a large block with some transparent layers over it" was the winner.

Right, because there's no

Right, because there's no possible way that I could've seen a frohawk with cornrows in real life.

Shaped primarily like Nouk's? Probable, but not very likely. You can ride the "this has nothing to do with Nouk" train to the wheels fall off, but everyone that sees this hair will automatically think Nouk. It's terrible that you refuse to acknowledge her and even worse that you get your bloomers in a bunch every time her name is mentioned. What did you expect?

I don't get my "bloomers" in

I don't get my "bloomers" in a bunch when Nouk's name is mentioned. Nouk is a legendary TS2 creator who gave generously to the community and provided much needed diversity to the game. I should be so lucky as to be compared to her or considered in the same breath.

However, what DOES get my panties in a bunch is when someone makes accusations against me, questions my artistic integrity, and essentially calls me a liar.

I have nothing but respect for Nouk, and if she had been my inspiration, then I would've credited her. Period. After all, I credited everyone else who helped, even down to HP, Delphy, and Wes Howe for their programs, plugins, and tutorials.

The frohawk with cornrows isn't some original style that Nouk made up. It's a rare style, sure, but it's common enough in big cities with lots of diversity. I had wanted to make a frohawk with cornrows years before I found out that Nouk had made one.

The problem is that you only see the final product here. I spent about a month learning how to create hair with this project and experimenting with different frohawk shapes. I probably have close to 40 different drafts of this hair saved on my computer. The final version of the frohawk that you see is at least my FOURTH version of it.

The first version was an ugly, Mr. T-ish cylinder with some pulled vertices.

The second version was a thick, inner spikey layer surrounded by two tiers of large puffs.

In the third version, I took out the spikey layer because it didn't look right and replaced it with an inner layer of round puffs.

For the fourth (and fifth?) versions, I took a tally of how many polygons the hair would end up being once all the undersides had been created. The current version would've been well over 10,000 polys, and I wanted to find a better balance of looks & game performance. So, I removed the inner and outermost puffs, squished everything together, and then made some flatter, lower poly layers on the outside to preserve the fluffy look while keeping the polys down.

The final design is simply the most efficient solution I could find to creating a frohawk that looked fluffy enough to be believable without bloating the poly count, and without stretching the polys to the point where they became too jaggedy.

If you had come in here and simply asked about similarities to Nouk, then I wouldn't have minded. Instead, you came in here and made assumptions about me. You accused me without hearing my side of the story. You have already made up your mind about my innocence or guilt.

For all the work and time I put into learning, experimenting, reshaping, texturing, mapping, and testing this hair, probably close to 70 hours, I don't deserve to deal with your kind of bullshit. And as far as I'm concerned, the fact that you can come to my site and download the products of all my hard work is a fucking privilege. There are too many presumptuous assholes on the internet, and I'm too old and wise to tolerate this kind of disrespect on my own site.

And this is why are you are banned. If you'd like to continue this conversation, then you may PM me on MTS--privately, discreetly, and with a respectful tone, as you should have done in the first place.

I LOVE this hair so much!!!!! Downloaded straight away! ^_^

So Awesome

This is amazing work! I've been craving more ethnic hair and this fills my addiction quite nicely! I hope you continue creating more hairstyles(and other things of course)!

I think my next creation kick

I think my next creation kick will be all about hair and some patterns, so hopefully this won't be the last you see from me.

Thanks! =)

Glad to see you back!!!!!

First of all I absolutely love this hair, not enough Ethnic hairs in our game, so thanks a bunch.....Secondly...SOOOOOOO glad to see you back, you have always been one of my favorite sims 3 creators, you make cc that's urban, quirky and just high quality to be honest....It's not goth, it's not punk, it's Youth...and I love your style...So keep doing your thang, and I THANKS THANKS again.....

Awww, thank you so much!

Awww, thank you so much! "Youth" sounds pretty good and all-encompassing to me. I try to ignore strict classifications like goth and punk and like whatever I like, which seems to be a little bit from anything that's quirky, edgy, nerdy, or feline. I'm planning on doing a few more African hairs next, so hopefully I'll get them done in a timely fashion.

No, really, though, this is nicely made (ESPECIALLY for a first-timer - I gave up after two meshes!) and so lovely. c:

Thank you. (And you don't

Thank you.

(And you don't want to see my actual first try at hair meshing, hahaha. It was over a year ago, I had no idea what I was doing, and it looked like a 6 year old made it.)

This is fantastic, thank you
